DLA game is up. It's the brand new DTM champ, cos I figured even the current guys won't have played that much if at all. Audi v Mercedes - pick a side and grab a car.

Game password is DLAbat.

We need 10 to start. Start your engines!

Figure it out as you go along, honestly, it's the best way, by race 2 you'll be proper hooked!

Basically you select car, in this case it's an Audi or Merc, but there's other race styles, including Formula 1.

Once you've selected your car, and assuming you've done basic settings like give yourself a team-name, home location, etc etc., you then go about setting your car up for each race.

At the top of the screen you have a button called "Garage", underneath that is "Car Setup". Go in there, then you'll see a dozen or so sliders. For each race, you will have practice, qualifying then race sessions. Essentially, you are now a team manager. For each and every race, and for each and every session, you refine your car settings, for wet, for dry, and you'll see the level of configurability.

You have 6 practice laps. Play around with the sliders, and adjust the settings to get the best times.

The cool thing about BAT racer is you can setup other factors which will have an impact on the race, i.e. your personality type, if you go for agressive, then if you're lucky, it'll pay off and you'll barge your way through the pack, or alternatively, you'll crash out.

When we get a full squad, Chaos will then begin the season, and every 24 hours, the game will cycle through practice, qualifying and races. Once the race has been over, you can either go directly to the results, OR you can get a lap by lap account of what's happening.

It's a full on race management simulator and very very well put together.

Chaos

Nailed that summary big guy. :)

Oz, you've gone for PSK and SD chars, which are two easy ones cos you don't have to actually do anything major to use them to their full! You should be able to run quite high sliders in qualifying (not played DTM before as it's new, but I'm guessing it'll be close to BTCC and LeMans) and the race, but don't get carried away with high sliders in setup cos generally you need specific characteristics for that.

As Mr Frags says, treat the first one as a learning experience, it'll be a giggle (unless everyone keeps crashing into me like one season we had, in which case I reserve the right to throw a piss on :P).

We need TEN minimum to start. With Benny and Mo we'll have 5 - get recruiting, people. I may, depending on workload and things at home, even dig out the old blog and do some write-ups for it. ;)

We need a minimum of 10 people to go. Get your lazy-ass brother online for starters. :P

Once we've done this and people have a feel for it, we'll do a LeMans single-series or something, so people can team up and then we'll get some proper racing. :D

Chaos

The quals will run, then you have 24 hours before every update. That means tonight/tomorrow you can do some more setup, then tomorrow at 8pm the race runs, then setup for the next quals before they run at 8pm Saturday, then warmup/setup for race 8pm Sunday. And so on..

You came behind one of the dummy drivers with no setup! :D Seriously, that shows you the random element, it's possible for anyone to beat anyone as long as you're close enough for luck to help out.

Give it a couple of races to discover some stuff on your own - really is more fun that way - then if people are still struggling I'll sort out a Netmeeting session and do some one-on-ones. :) This series really is just a warm-up. I'm sure that Fas, Mud, Mo etc will all beef me and there'll be a bit of competition as they've played it before, and almost got within sight of my brilliance before I humiliated them :GrosBras:, but seriously the overall results aren't worth worrying about until the next series - just learn :thumb:.

Chaos
03-07-2009, 07:59 PM
Well that was an eventful first race. :)

For the next one, some pointers:

- Make sure that you check the Engineer Report in the top right of the setup page. I ran my first setup lap for the new race and was half a second faster than 2 peoples' fastest laps, so I'm not sure if people are doing that

- Rain setups need some maths and also the above Eng Rep - check http://batracer.com/-ph?read&186 out for how to do it

- REMEMBER TO GO TO QUALS PAGE AND SELECT WET TYRES - then remember to change them back to dry before the next race or you'll go out on wets again :)

- If you hit 'Easy Txt Share' at the top of the setup page, you can record the dry settings, then if it goes back to dry for the race after you've changed it all to wet for quals, you can see what you had before and pick up where you left off ;)

Saqib
04-07-2009, 08:51 PM
Yeah, it said bone dry??

M7ammed
05-07-2009, 02:55 AM
If I'm not mistaken it will say that until you finish all your laps then it switches to what ever the quali/race weather is.

Chaos
05-07-2009, 09:35 AM
Ah ok, I see where people got caught.

Setup, which was what you were doing, was bone dry. In the very top right of the setup screen though are the weather conditions for that session and the next, and the next said steady rain for yesterday.

The double-check is that when you're looking at the engineer's report and seeing what you need to do for settings, if there's a list below it of wet adjustments then something's changing on the weather and you need to check. I'll try and give people a heads-up if it happens, then if you're not sure how or why you can shoot a reply and I'll be able to show you.

And in other news, just noticed there's weight penalties in DTM (can see them if you go to Season Standings), like I wasn't fat enough already. :P

Mud
05-07-2009, 10:43 AM
Yeah, it said bone dry??

The weather for the set-up laps where bone dry, BUT the weather for the qualifying was for rain, so you have to setup for bone dry and your laps and then check the engineers report and adjust the settings for wet using the % depending on exactly how wet it is.

Saqib
05-07-2009, 03:01 PM
I see. So just to confirm I've got it correct, the race tonight is in dry conditions yeah?

The perfect setup lies 1 points beyond the capabilities of the car.

What does this mean? That I shouldn't go for the best settings? Am worried my car's going to fall apart now lol how bad is 1 point above?

Mud
07-07-2009, 11:35 AM
that means you cant get the perfect setup, as it says, you still need to setup as best as you can.

Chaos
07-07-2009, 12:44 PM
Doodster - it's a marathon, not a sprint. ;)

Saqib - nice work again in pre-race! That means one of your settings is either below 0 or above 100 (-1 or 101 with that figure, obviously). If you have one slider, and only one, that can be 0 or 100, then set it to that as that'll be your spot on setting. If you have two or more that could be the one, you need to see if you're feeling lucky... :)

BTW - I had two bad sessions setting up, even with experience you still need luck, so my setup should be a pitch away from perfect yet and I'm carrying 10 kilos - time for one of you woofters to try and take the champ lead...:neener:

Fas
07-07-2009, 12:49 PM
Stupid question:

Warmup is wet, race is dry (obviously I know that this can change during the race)

However, there's no "warmup" setup is there? What are you meant to do with that info, setup the car for warmup somehow?

Saqib
07-07-2009, 01:23 PM
i THINK you're supposed to set-up the car as it is, ie under wet conditions, then once done you adjust it for the dry conditions based on the engineers report (which are for wet so you need to do the opposite?) Thats my understanding anyway. If I'm wrong someone tell me before 8!

Chaos
07-07-2009, 02:51 PM
OK. All engineer reports are done for DRY (bone dry). Underneath them are the changes to move it to FULL WET (storm).

If a session is halfway between dry and wet, as most are, then you need to apply percentages. http://batracer.com/-ph?read&186 explains in detail, and shows the weather indicators to the right so you can gauge how far down the scale the wetness is...

Does that make sense? Happy to fill in gaps if necessary..

Saqib
07-07-2009, 03:01 PM
Right, so since we're going from a wet set-up to a dry race, I need to change my settings 72% in the opposite direction of the engineers report? ..right?

Chaos

Gambling on stop times is a valid strat, and it would have paid off if it weren't for karma mucking with the high pace setting Moe was running. You can see the difference in decent tyres though - I pushed mine hard and didn't have a good third set, so I ripped past on the fresh second set but couldn't catch at all on the third.

Lots of ways to win or lose. :)

I've lost my way around the UI and haven't had a proper dig, but in terms of stop strategy, I only have the option of 2 pits, how do I select to increase or decrease the number of pits I want to do?

Also, on closed wheel racing, what range do the slicks last for? Is 25 laps on one set of slicks too much?

Chaos
07-07-2009, 09:03 PM
You can only do a 2-stop in DTM I think, though you'll obviously change tyres etc if you have to pit due to an accident or whatever.

Closed wheel is a big of pot pourri, but this champ seems more similar to the BTCC than the LMES, which means you can run hard for a decent amount of laps. I'd guess at a set of slicks lasting early-20s on 100% slider. Maybe 90% would see you go through a set in 25 laps.. We'll all find out after the next race :D, but for now you could maybe look at what slider you had, then check back to the race tonight and compare your starting condition against your pitting condition (go to the race and click Toggle Data under the lap no for your car and tyre conditions).

M7ammed

Chaos

The settings were the only reason you got out of the pits in front of me, so not all of them are! :P

I've been at work since 0820 yesterday morning, not looking like I'll get home til at least 1900-2000 today either so expect lots of mistakes for tonight's session - tho at least I have a decent excuse! :P

Chaos

LOL I joined an LMES game last night for shits and giggles cos that was always my fave. All I did was qualify and I got my old ranking back! So now my stealth-mode attack on the GT class is blown, plus I have to actually perform or I'll slide down from my lofty perch. So much for just mucking about and not affecting my history! :omg:

PS - Oz, do your setup laps dude!

Chaos
08-07-2009, 07:46 PM
Well. What a wash out. Quals were craptastic, then I had 2 ridiculously low % crashes in warmup and lost all my laps. Starting from the back with the heaviest penalty and a fkin MILE from a decent setup. May as well go shopping and save tyres for the next race...!

Saqib
08-07-2009, 07:48 PM
Dan - Whats the deal with these weight thing we've go? I've got one now too :( How does it affect us and what do I need to do to make it go away!

Chaos
09-07-2009, 08:31 AM
Every podium you get - 5kg weight penalty. They go away at the end of the season. ;) It's one of the two main reasons why I chose this champ for the learner-season - figured it would even out the experienced/quicker guys with the newbies as you get penalised more for early-season wins. :)

Chaos
09-07-2009, 07:38 PM
LOL pure guesswork on the lap timing in warmup got me the second best setup for the race :D

20kg penalty now - if I get any more podiums they'll sit my ass in concrete...

As for the next race, first setup: Crash all but one lap, second setup: Crash again. Not even posted a time and hardly any setup, so now is the time to bust me up, unless I get real lucky with the high risk sliders I'm gonna have to run in quals then I'm gonna be way down the grid!

Benny, you should know as a 'regular' :P, check in your Quals setup and you'll have selected Wets on your second and third (I think, from last meet's quals) runs for the first meet where it was wet quals. Must have changed the first set back and not the rest. :slap:

I cannot believe how poor everyones setup is for this race, that the unmanned teams beat us in qualifying!! lol

Saqib, that was awesome dude, great result for a newbie. Fas had no luck and Benny learnt why you have to be careful with agro sliders - like Mo did with the pace slider!

So then. Votes! What next?

We can go open wheel or closed, team or solo - post up your preference and I'll do the stuff!

Chaos
21-07-2009, 08:55 PM
I'd suggest MR2 or BTCC for closed wheel (8 to play), Le Mans LMP1/LMP2/GTS/GT class for ultimate closed wheel (12 to play), 8 of the F1 years for open wheel play (10 to play) - all of which are teams of 2 drivers - or BAT7 for a bit of both and teams of 3.

Mud
21-07-2009, 09:04 PM
Well we will probably only get 8 players max

Chaos
21-07-2009, 09:25 PM
Aye. I can make dummies again, but it's clumsy and I'd rather keep it amongst just us. One or two more would make the options nicer. I'd love us to play a Le Mans season if we could get enough though, they're properly good fun and the races are MAHOOSIVE (opening race is about 396 laps long, from memory) so you get major value for your game! :)

Edit: Actually there's just over a fortnight left, so whilst I can't join another LMES we could maybe jump into something else. What do ya fancy? BAT7 is next one up, you like?

For some reason I keep missing replies.. :(

Right, leave it with, we'll aim to set something up when a good series arrives. In fact, better yet, change your password to a generic one and PM me it, I'll join us both up and you can change it back afterwards - easier than trying to get us both online. ;)

Gonna post the tutorial stuff here, partly to stop it dropping off the end of the page before Mud sees it (if he's in), and partly cos it may be interesting for others later on - obviously read from the bottom up!:

On the previous note about setting weather and tyres to 100%, you seriously have to remember to change it every race, cos if you drop your luck in an enduro it's SO bloody annoying!!

- - - - -

Tyres

Slick - use in the dry, obviously
32R - used when it's not quite bone dry, not too common
21R - think of it as an intermediate
Wet - duh... http://batracer.com/-i?59

Usually set mine to:
0
-off- (or 10ish)
32
70

NOTE: If you have your tyres set to whatever and your weather slider to 100% (never come in), if you stop for any other reason IT WILL PUT YOU OUT ON THE RIGHT TYRES FOR THE WEATHER ON THAT LAP! This can be a bonus to offset a bit of bad luck with a good side-benefit. :)

- - - - -

OK, races make a difference here.

If you look over the season, you alternate sprint and endurance at every track.

SPRINT
Set your tyre sliders to 100% - burn them down, they'll last
Set your wet weather slider to 100% - never come in, it pays off about 90% of the time

ENDURO
Set tyre sliders to 50-75%, see what suits you
Set wet weather to 10-20%, which will usually be 2 or 3 laps. Any less and the weather could change back meaning 2 stops in 2 laps and race over..

- - - - -

forgot the tire choices for this whats the difference between them?

I'm put tire use on the high side , around 80ish

- - - - -

Aggressive is one of the 3 chars you'd use for 7s, helps you barge through the pack early on, which is a damn sight easier than trying to pass later. http://batracer.com/-i?61

- - - - -

what does aggressive give ?

- - - - -

OK - TACTICS

BAT7 is a setup qualifier. The times we do in setup will determine our grid. Thus, we have to be smart.

- NOBODY does more than 2 laps before we've all had a chip in. If you use extra cos of a mistake then no sweat, can't be helped, but only hit the button twice.

- I'd suggest Mud does a couple of 100% runs early, as he has Thinker, if not I'll play his and do them. Once we all have some times on the board, Mud start the next session with a couple more. That should get us close.

- TWO LAPS LEFT IN SETUP is the time to stop. At that point you run ONE 0% lap and set your time to try and get to the top of the grid, then LAST LAP is a 100% attempt for everyone to nail a spot on setting at no penalty.

So, on a 7 lap setup like this one:

7 - normal run
6 - normal run
- wait -
5 - normal run
4 - normal run
3 - normal run
2 - 0% qualifying run
1 - 100% setup run

- - - - -

LOL only 2 of us in the top 400!

Team Weave should be the guys to beat on paper, one quick guy plus Jeff Wilshire who's def quicker than WR500ish..

Chaos
23-07-2009, 12:54 PM
Also of note, cos I saw you mentioning stubborn sliders, BAT7 is notoriously hard to set up, cos it's ramped up to cater for 3-man teams. That's why teams not full have a hard time of it, and why it's important to get at least one Thinker and some experience.

You'll see once we start getting through the races that our setups will be up there with the better ones. ;)
